More than 950 schools in Houston, East Texas, Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana were severely impacted by hurricane flooding in 2017.
Thousands of classrooms and tens of thousands of students have little or no school supplies.
In Houston alone, more than 1 trillion gallons fell. That is more than 10 full-sized swimming pools of water that fell each day, for every person, over a five day period.
Scores of school and shelter libraries were wiped out by the relentless storm. Many started over with nothing.
We collected school supplies children’s books.
We had the following mantra:
Every pencil counts.
Every book counts.
We are located in Houston, Texas - at the epicenter of the destruction left by Hurricane Harvey in 2017.
Our office team and warehouse served as a central collection and distribution site during the donation period.
In any natural disaster, there are three phases:
1. Rescue
2. Relief
3. Rebuild
Our focus was on providing relief as well as rebuilding classrooms and empowering students.
Our goal was to collect and distribute a total of $25,000 of school supplies and children’s books.
Update: As of November 17, 2017, we received a total of $60,774 in donations from across the country. Great job!
There were only two categories of items for this project: School Supplies and Children’s Books (Pre-K through 12h grade). This project does not involve monetary donations of any kind... only school supplies and children’s books.
We continued to collect and distribute children's books and school supplies at our annual State Pageants every summer through 2019. In 2020, with the COVID 19 Pandemic, we shifted our focus to girls working within their own communities to donate their time and supplies directly to causes important to them. We still require each girl who competes at a National American Miss State Pageant to donate a children's book(s) to their local school or library, donate school supplies to a school or organization of their choice, or volunteer their time with a project they feel passionately about.
NAM girls are making a difference across their communities, home states, and the world.
National American Miss (NAM) is one of the largest scholarship-style pageant systems in the United States. Our national office is located in Houston, Texas.
At the state pageant events through 2019, our participants and families brought a nationwide total of more than $400,000 in collected children’s books and school supplies. We distributed those donations to women’s shelters, first responders, schools, hospitals, and many other charities that serve families.
NAM is recognized as the leader in natural pageants, emphasizing a make-up free experience for younger participants, and a confidence-growing experience for all ages. Want to get involved? Find your state here.
